Time For Baseball Cards
Well, it's that time again--time to change the baseball card image that we display here at "Cooperstown Confidential." (My thanks again to noted author and Latino baseball expert Peter Bjarkman for suggesting our last card, which depicts Cuban pitching star Pedro Luis Lazo.)
Readers can submit suggestions, along with a brief reason behind the suggestion, by posting here or by sending me an e-mail at bmarkusen@stny.rr.com. Baseball card images can represent current players (either major or minor leaguers) or retired players. Suggestions can come from any of the major card companies, like Topps, Fleer, Donruss, Upper Deck, Score and the like.

I've always been partial to the 1966 Willie Mays - Card #1 in the set, and the first card I bought in 1966, on top in a cello pack that sold for a quarter at Powell's Department Store, downtown Johnson City, TN. Of all the cards of my youth, this is the only card I still have ... Willie with a big smile, bright, clear day in Spring Training - but perhaps a little chilly, as Willie's wearing the long-sleeves under the home uniform. He stands, ball in hand ... I always thought that while Ernie Banks made 'Let's play two!' famous, Willie was more likely to be the one to actually play both games, and provide a week's worth of highlights in the process.
